Marking the 2014–2018 centenary of the First World War, the State Library Victoria's permanent exhibition The Changing Face of Victoria has a dedicated area exploring the stories of Victorians both on the homefront and abroad.
Researcher and curator Christine Eid undertook extensive research for the First World War exhibition feature. Eid scoped and established a curatorial framework for the five year program, which will be updated annually, and curated the 2014 display.
Working with the Library's exhibitions team and engaging with collection specialists throughout the Library, Eid delved into the State Library Victoria's extraordinary collections.
The 2014 display focuses on personal stories and material relating to the outbreak of war, the Gallipoli campaign as well as recruiting, training and fundraising initiatives on the homefront.
The diaries, letters, realia, maps, posters and postcards offer a unique insight into the lives and experiences of Sister Alice Kitchen, Private Alfred Love, Private Victor Laidlaw and Midshipman Richard Stanley Veale.
The research has also informed the production of a series of four short digital films that bring to life the poignant stories of nursing sister Alice Kitchen, First Lieutenant Eric Chinner, Sergeant George Auchterlonie and Lance Corporal Percy Langford.
