Join us for a premiere multimedia performance that provides glimpses into the story of the Beyer family, who were at the heart of the 19th-century rollerskating craze in Australia and New Zealand.

Francis Beyer and his family were renowned for hosting crowd-pleasing novelties in the roller rink, such as fancy-dress carnivals, roller races, roller musical chairs and even a wedding on skates.

Rinking combines live performance, rare footage and soundscape to chart the Beyers’ rise in the world of rollerskating, until the tragedies of war ultimately tore them apart.

Following the performance, a small selection of items from the Dan Clifton Collection relating to the Beyer family will be on display.

This is part of a long-term book project supported by the City of Melbourne annual Arts Grants Program and presented in partnership with State Library Victoria.
